Saturday Night Chorus- Sectionals
Where you can laugh and learn with your friends over THREE sessions? Right here with the Roses! Session one will start with sectionals with section leaders. Sessions two and three we will have full group rehearsals with break out duets. Because one of these sessions MAY conflict with a class you really want to take at HCNW, we understand if you need to miss one of our sessions. No worries.

This style of class is perfect for music teams and directors to see new ways of leading rehearsals. Barbershop groups tend to use one person out front all night, but tag-team/rotating leaders can also be wildly effective, and gives our learners a different voice that *might* connect learning in a stronger way than the other leader. Our sessions will use one SATB chart (Who Will Buy, arr. Dave Briner) with accurate and quality learning media. Because we have multiple sessions to craft this song, we can hone this barbershop classic for the show and really make something special! We invite everyone to join in the fun and sing with your friends!

After registering, you will receive a link to the sheet music and learning tracks.

Sing in Barbershop Style
Sing in Barbershop Style: There are a thousand things you can do with a song; come learn the critical things you have to do in order for the song to be barbershop. If you don’t use these five, you cannot succeed in singing barbershop. We will also explore a second Ah Hah and trap -- just because a chart is written in the barbershop style, it doesn’t mean that you are singing it in the barbershop style. This class will help you understand what barbershop is, and how to use your new understanding of the barbershop style to move from being a "notes and words" singer to a singer who gives the barbershop song its due. This class is for everyone from novices to experts.

Directors: Focus by Ignoring
Why are so many predators color blind?  They can ignore information that is not helpful and focus on what will be their next meal. Barbershop directors: we have ALL stopped and reminded our groups about errors involving an incorrect breath, word, pitch, or move! What if we spoke less and rehearsed more? Why are so many predators color blind?  They can ignore information that is not helpful and focus on what will be their next meal. Barbershop directors: we have ALL stopped and reminded our groups about errors involving an incorrect breath, word, pitch, or move! What if we spoke less and rehearsed more?

Donny will introduce S.M.A.R.T. goals to directors (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound), where volunteer students will be both directors and chorus members with the instructor acting as coach. This type of instruction is most successful for adult learners, and will make a 2 hour rehearsal feel like 15 minutes... instead of the other way around.

Visual and Vibrant Vocal Techniques
Would you like more resonance in your voice or in your ensemble?  This class takes a holistic approach utilizing Visual approaches and the Vibrnt Wavebox Singing concepts to help with posture, resonance, placement, and vocal texturing.  The best part is that these techniques have been distilled down into concepts that make them very approachable and reproducible for yourself or for your ensemble! When coaching a music judge's chorus in this after only 2 minutes, he stated, "Wow! That was a whole 10 points higher!"

Quartet Leadership Dynamics and Collaboration
A class on building a long-lasting quartet and how to navigate the needs and strengths and weaknesses of 4 separate people. I would include how to build a quartet rehearsal, how each person can contribute to the quartet outside of just their voice, how to find a place in your greater singing community. We all know from experience that quartetting is just a different animal from chorus singing, mainly in part of the fact that you have to be independent vocally, but even more is the fact that you have to be independently motivated. Without a director to guide your every step, many new quartets are left fending for themselves and it can be hard. This class would be for those who want to be in a long-lasting quartet but aren't sure where to start getting 4 individuals on the same page.

Saturday Night Chorus - Rehearsal

A Soloist Perspective on Creating compelling contemporary A Cappella
This is an highly interactive group class. We'll cover contemporary vocal and performance techniques to connect with and release your solo voice. Our goal is open communication with our audience from and position on stage. Whether you're fronting the band or supporting on background vocals, rocking that sweet bass line or leading the quartet, or holding the chorus together from the tenor or bari section, the skills we will put into practice are essential for contemporary vocal performers of all types. Your priorities will lead our discussion and activities, so come with a goal or two you'd like to address.  Also, bring a 16-bar section of melody from a favorite song to work through.  If you have the sheet music, great! If not, please bring the lyrics written/printed out.  If you'd like to do some live coaching on it, please also know your key and starting note.

Vocal Production: Vocal Colors
With a focus in use of technique and placement, helping singers expand their palette to use and create different colors in their voice and music. I envision this being part vocal exercises to start accessing different colors in a healthy way and part song study, where we would take a melody and analyze how I personally would approach learning the song and deciding how to use the different vocal tools I have to bring it to life. This could be considered especially useful for leads, but of course anyone is welcome.

Body, Breath, Movement and Meaning. Part 2/2
The journey toward connected, authentic performance starts with freeing the body and the breath. This sets us up for vocal ease and success but also for clear, present communication onstage. From there we connect to movement and text, engaging our imagination for performances that feel believable and fresh every time.

This class includes some gentle floorwork for releasing physical tension. You will need to bring a yoga mat. *This class happens over 2 classes cumulatively.  Sessions 5 & 6.

Saturday Night Chorus - Rehearsal

Rhythm Basics
Feel the groove! This class will help you expand your rhythmic vocabulary - including note values, rests, and different meters - and introduce practical tips for reading and ‘hearing’ rhythms before you sing them. We will discuss tempo driven songs– fast and slow - and identify ways to sing them without speeding up or slowing down. Come ready to clap, tap and stomp your way through quarter notes, eighth notes, and triplets… and learn the importance of subdivisions and feeling the pulse. Basic music reading skill will enhance your experience in this class.  Offered in sessions 1 and 6.

Getting Beyond Scoresheets
Getting Beyond Scoresheets: Instead of using your score to judge how well you are succeeding, use two alternate yardsticks: The Comfort of the Audience and The Believability of Your Song. The target audience for this class is singers who care about getting better and who have worked at it but are frustrated that the effort-to-reward ratio has been so meager. Linear thinkers and logical rational sequential doers are prized students.

Everything You Need to Video Record Your Rehearsals
What if you could capture video of all of your rehearsals? Northwest Sound has been recording weekly rehearsals since 2017 and it has had enormous impact – from member retention (being able to catch up on days when absent) to sectional growth (being able to review teachable moments from rehearsals) to choreography and individual engagement. In this session, we will go over everything you need to get going – including the hardware (approximately $300), software (free), and end-to-end workflow (10-15 minutes per rehearsal) that makes of this all possible.
